Lionel Fanthorpe was the most prolific contributor to Badger Books, a British paperback imprint published by John Spencer & Co. between the 1950s and 60s. Fanthorpe didn’t just write for them; he practically was them. The Man of a Thousand Names Fanthorpe is legendary for using dozens of pseudonyms to make the Badger Books catalog look like it had a massive roster of international authors. If you see a Badger Book by Bron Fane, Pel Torro, Leo Brett, or Karl Zeigfreid, you’re almost certainly reading Fanthorpe. The "Tape-to-Type" Method What makes these books unique is how they were written. Facing impossible deadlines, Fanthorpe would often dictate his stories into a reel-to-reel tape recorder. Then his wife and mother working as audio typists would type up the manuscripts.
