Subskills and Mastery - Narrow your focus to become more effective.

Altered World is a Talent based system, but we didn't want the skill list to become unwieldy, so we kept the base Talents broad in application, and then developed a system of Subskills to represent someone applying a tighter focus to their study. The cost of taking a subskill at character creation is that your base Talent rating decreases to reflect the idea that in order to become as good as you have at one aspect of the Talent, you have had to forgo spending as much time on the other aspects. We feel this mirrors the way people learn information without being too mechanically cumbersome.
