Dani Gal at the artist symposium on October 8th, 2020 at Weltmuseum Wien, in video conversation with curator Marina Gržinić about his film “Fields of Neutrality (The Last Interview with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe)” (2019, HD video, 32 min.) The architectural historian Winfried Nerdinger labelled the arts practised at the Bauhaus school, mainly architecture, design, and photography, “neutral fields of activity.” Using this term, Nerdinger argued that the high number of people from the Bauhaus who ended up working under the Nazi regime perceived their work as politically neutral by nature, and were therefore indifferent to moral considerations about who their client was. Following its opening in 1919, the Bauhaus school constantly came under political attacks, first from the conservative wings of the Weimar government and later in Dessau and Berlin by the newly established Nazi government. For the Nazis, Bauhaus was a symbol of cultural Bolshevism, a term that represented all the modernist elements in society that were dangerous and therefore needed to be eliminated. Commissioned by the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart on the occasion of the Bauhaus centennial, this staged television-style interview with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe depicts the architect late in his life, confronted with his time as the final Bauhaus director, and his refusal to take a political stance amid pressure from the newly established Nazi government and communist students. This unexplored case of Mies van der Rohe gains contemporary relevance when one considers the current worldwide rise of right-wing populism and the decay of democracy. By examining the nature of Mies van der Rohe’s apolitical behaviour and his relationship with the Nazis, we gain insight not only into the climate of the last days of the Bauhaus and its clash with fascist forces but also into our own moral assumptions historically and at the present time. Gal’s artistic practice focuses on the production of ideology through the representation of specific historical narratives in a variety of media in order to question the claims of historical knowledge and to reveal and challenge underlying political preconception.
