Affectionately know as Salami, Mr. David Robertson was the first Rastaman in our village, that is in the La Digue area of St. Andrew's parish. Depending on whom you talked to during the late 1970's, he was either blamed for breaking with tradition or praised for bringing in a new element of culture; a culture of consciousness that captivated most of the youths in the area. This chat is our second, I somehow lost the first recording. This man is such a humble, warm-spirited person, despite his many accomplishments, I admire him immensely, even more so for having the courage to do what he knew was right for him. He is from a very academic family, and his father was the principal of the primary school he attended. He started his formal schooling at St. Giles Anglican School, in St. Andrew's parish before heading off to the Grenada Boys Secondary (GBSS) for his next level of education. There he began to become aware of The Black Power and Rastafarian Movements. He worked in the Ministry of Health, taught Math at the St. Andrew's Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) for while, went to the hills and grew his locks, not knowing how his parents would take. He did many other jobs including being a gunner in the Peoples Revolutionary Army. He is still an active marathoner, despite he is almost 69 years old and he loves farming. I was told my many that he shares his produce with whomever needs it. I had an amazing time chatting with Mr. Robertson and I hope you do enjoy the interview as well. I thank him for letting us into a window of his journey and I thank you for watching.
