NOTE: This game has sound glitches. I've tried my best to edit the missing music and most of the critical voice lines into the footage. The results aren't perfect, so you’ll have to bear with me. Here's a high-scoring, 1 credit clear (no death/no continue run) of Sega's 2005 rail shooter Rambo, based on the film franchise of the same name. This was played on Teknoparrot with a GUN4IR gun. A score of 918,430 points and the highest "RAMBO" final rating are earned. Rambo is distinguished by its machine gun gameplay, quick time events, its use of movie footage for cutscenes and some character dialogue, and its… strange choice of hip hop music in parts of the soundtrack. The game was also directed by Takashi Oda, who directs Sega’s House of the Dead series. Released on the Sega Lindbergh arcade board, Rambo was never officially ported and is vanishing from arcades; the boards are nearly 20-year-old PCs which have failing parts that aren’t manufactured anymore. I remember playing this game at the Illinois GameWorks location. I have no plans to see any of the Rambo films (I don't like Hollywood), so I can't rate the use of film assets, but overall I think this game -- while short and linear -- is okay and is at least way better than Rambo: The Video Game. This is like Virtua Cop's "Justice Shot" system. The possible awards for killing an enemy include a QUICK shot for defeating an enemy quickly without a justice shot; a CRACK shot for slowly justice shotting the enemy; and a HEROIC shot for quickly justice shotting the enemy (the most valuable). You can collect medals either by finding them in destructible objects, completing quick time events, or beating levels with high-enough accuracy. Medals determine your end-of-stage grade, with 2 bonus lives awarded for PERFECT grades, 1 bonus life for AMAZING grades, and no lives awarded for any grade below AMAZING. Killing enemies, collecting special items, and taking damage also increases your Rage Gauge. Pressing the Rage button will slowly empty the meter and activate Rage, a state which boosts your weapon damage as long as there's still meter left. Activating Rage when the Rage Gauge is maxed out will also give you complete invincibility during that Rage's duration. For typical 1CC play, it's best to save Rage for boss fights. Several boss attack phases are extremely hard, if not impossible, to clear without damage and without using Rage. The ships in Stage 2 and the tank in Stage 4 are the worst offenders of this. You are not awarded if you take damage with a maxed Rage Gauge, so unless you're going for a "no Rage" 1CC run, it's best to activate Rage at some point. Lives max at 10. Bonus lives are found in destructible objects and are also awarded from good end-of-stage grades. Accuracy is the most challenging criteria, but you can boost your accuracy by shooting enemy vehicles repeatedly. With PERFECT grades and some first aid kits giving you 2 lives instead of 1, you can earn a ton of life if you play well. This is important because some enemies and bosses will dock you 2 lives (yes, *2*) instead of 1. Many quick time events cost a life upon failure, but others force you to fight more enemies instead. This is risky but can be worth more points; you'll see me deliberately fail some quick time events in this run. The game's focus on resource management (the "Rage" mechanic) feels like a precursor to House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn's sub-weapons. Both games indicate the difficulty level of the particular cabinet you're playing on in the leaderboards, which is weird and uncommon in the light gun genre. #gaming #videogames #playthrough #arcade #sega #rambo #firstblood
