NOTE: This game has sound glitches. Here is a high-scoring, 1 credit clear (no death/continue run) of Sega's 2002 rail shooter The Maze of the Kings. This was recorded in the Flycast emulator using a GUN4IR light gun. In the run, I found all four treasures, scored over 300,000 points to earn the highest S rank, and cleared the first two stages without damage. I've never seen a 1CC video for this game, so I thought I'd record one just to demonstrate that it's possible. The Maze of the Kings is one of the hardest light gun games I've ever cleared in one credit. The game has a rank system that speeds up enemies and bosses if you play well. The scoring and branching paths are random, too, which can lead to frustration if you're going for a high score and/or 1CC due the difficulty and point item values varying. I remember playing this game at Chuck E. Cheese's. It's a neat game, but given the large amounts of RNG I personally don't recommend playing this for score. Just sit back and enjoy the cheesy voice acting, cinematic music, and wonderful Dreamcast-era graphics. The game ran on the NAOMI arcade hardware, which is based on the Dreamcast, but was never ported, unlike Confidential Mission (also by Hitmaker) and The House of the Dead 2. Instead of guns, you use magical staffs, and the light guns on the cabinet were these cool Anubis staff-shaped controllers. The Maze of the Kings offers some unique mechanics that The House of the Dead lacked: Selectable shot types. There's three of them, so you can pick either more bullets for less damage, or vice versa. I've had the most success with the "Fire" shot type, the most powerful one. Consequently, you only have 4 shots per round and thus reload more often. Single-use items. These protect you from a particular kind of attack only once. Upon use, the item goes away and only comes back if you die and continue. Your decision here should be based on enemies that you know you struggle with. I chose the Jacket because the skeleton swordsmen are nasty at high difficulty. Random branching paths. Some are fixed, but most others are RNG-dependent. The paths vary in length, some even have unique minibosses or QTEs. I actually don't know how many possible routes there are in this game. You can't see them all in a single playthrough. Non-boss enemies lack weak points and simply die when shot enough times anywhere. Some protect themselves with shields. There are a few enemy types with different color palettes, which determine their strength and behavior. Boss fights involve shooting targets, Jurassic Park: The Lost World-style, to stop them from attacking. All enemy attack and move speeds are influenced by a rank system. The better you play, the faster they move. You also get less time to shoot the targets on bosses. This forces me to preemptively shoot where the first target will appear, so that I can quickly destroy it and buy me some time to deal with the rest. The scoring is unbalanced. The point items and their locations are all random. Some items start at a few hundred points, and others start at 10 thousand points! After revealing a score item, you can juggle it repeatedly via more shots to increase the value to some maximum. Once the item is at max value, there's no further bonus to be had for further hits, so it's best to to focus fire on something else. 13:34 notably has a score item that starts at 10,000 and was increased up to 55,000, which is almost half my score! You get extra lives either by collecting three stones, or shooting golden sarcophagus items. The lives only start getting awarded in the second stage. #gaming #videogames #playthrough #arcade #sega #retrogaming #retro #arcade #ancient #egypt #mummy #sphynx #anubis
