Happy holidays everyone! Had to do one last cover to see off 2020 before going off to see families and in-laws for the rest of the month!! So this is seemingly very random, but as this channel serves as my personal diary of games I have played and loved either recently or decades ago in the distant past lol, this cover falls into the former category. And if it tastes and smells like a Final Fantasy, it IS a Final Fantasy lol, made by Sakaguchi and possibly the last score Uematsu will ever write. Plus it was robbed at The Game Awards last week--no shade on Genshin but it was released in 2020 and technically shouldn't have even been eligible for Best Mobile of 2021, unlike Fantasian, which was released this past April! All this is basically an excuse for me to just gush forever about how great of a game Fantasian is and how all of you with Apple devices HAVE TO PLAY IT. DOWNLOAD IT NOW!! If you don't have Apple Arcade, do what I did and subscribe for the 5 or 6 bucks, play it, beat it, unsub so you're basically paying less than $10 for this absolute unit of a RPG. (Or don't unsub, like I did, and spend many weekends dipping into the quirky indie offerings of Apple Arcade lmao.) Despite being for mobile devices, Fantasian is a full length, bona fide JPRG, 60+ hours of a remarkable, likable cast, stunning visuals (THOSE HANDMADE DIORAMAS ❤️❤️❤️), run-of-the-mill story but serviceable, super fun gameplay that utilizes the touchscreen to great effect and you can throw all your random encounter enemies into this outerdimensional space to fight them all at once whenever you so choose, which speeds up the grinding CONSIDERABLY and ensures you don't limp into boss battles with half your HP/MP because you were ambushed in the three steps between save point and staging area right after you healed yourself to the max. Yes the console exclusivity sucks and we can only hope it will come to Switch or something in the future because it is 10000000% a Final Fantasy, and not just any FF, but like, CLASSIC pre FF7 Final Fantasy, with enough cool innovations to feel like a modern gaming experience. It's easy to just pick up and get into right away without sitting through a zillion tutorials. IT'S GREAT AND I LOVED IT OMG. Maxed out every single trophy, every locked chest, everyone's ability grid lol, the only thing I didn't max out was levels because after 50 or so, it becomes considerably harder to level up, but it's overkill anyways. Bosses are tough but if you use the right combinations of everyone's unique buffs/debuffs, you can take them down easily, no mindless button mashing, you gotta play smart. It's a bit like FFX in that you can switch out your party members mid-battle, but more refined. Anyways, my favorite Mistwalker game to date, it's got some Lost Odyssey elements, like the storybook portions, which i absolutely love. It's a Final Fantasy game in spirit!! About this track. I'm gonna be real with you guys. Like all of you, I respect and owe so much to Nobuo Uematsu, but....I...did not love the soundtrack. 😭 I'M SORRY!!!! There were a few standout tracks I did love though, and this is one of them. I was actually really struck this one because it was so reminiscent of Uematsu's FF8 era, and indeed, the way it's utilized in game is similar in that it's a track that has a particular special meaning to the main character, Leo. Kinda like how the FF8 track Julia (from which all the iterations of Waltz for the Moon and such are derived) has significance to Laguna and Squall. Also like in FF8, at some point Leo sits down at a piano and plays the piece, like how Julia played in the bar where Laguna first met her in Galbadia. Last FF8 similarity, the closing scene in the Fantasian ending is reminiscent of the closing scene of FF8 with Balamb Garden sailing off into the horizon, and a variation of this track plays with vocals and strings. I thought it was such a lovely, fitting ending to the game so I arranged that version, with the ending progression. Anyways please give a Fantasian a chance! It's so good! Happy holidays and see you all in January!! (Targeted next month for final release for the Final Fantasy Tactics album!! Album artist has been commissioned and working on the art! I gotta review all the tracks and decide if I need to re-record any more of the earlier ones lol....)
