In today's video, my son and I head into the forest to retrieve a massive spruce log that was downed by the wind last autumn. You might remember this log from one of my previous videos where we were cleaning it up. Now, it’s time to turn it into something useful for our homestead. I’m making a "valiv" — a traditional wooden pig trough. While our ancestors used to carve these entirely by hand, I’m combining old-world techniques with modern tools, using a chainsaw to rough out the shape and a traditional adze (hand-tool) for the finishing touches. In this video: Hauling the heavy log out of the woods on a sled. The step-by-step process of carving and hollowing out the wood. Installing the new trough in the barn and seeing how our pig enjoys its first meal from the new "bowl."
