Why bicycles have their own Underground Parking Garage in the Netherlands. As many as 22.5 million bicycles in such a small country. This is one of the reasons as to why bicycles have their own Underground Parking Garage in the Netherlands. We simply need ‘em. If we wouldn’t have those bicycle parking spots everywhere, our cities would be cluttered with bicycles. Bicycles would appear in the strangest places, just imagine our beautiful canals filled with bicycles… We would need to assign people to get ‘em out of there. This could potentially even be a special job that we’d call baggeren. (Most authentic Job in Amsterdam right there.) But this is exactly why the Dutch need those bicycle parking spots. The Dutch government has realized that a canal is not the most convenient parking spot. In recent years they have raised the amount of bicycle parking places from 200,000 to 490,000. In 2017 the Dutch government decided to invest 100 million Euros in cycling projects. A year later, an additional 75 million Euros were allocated for construction of bicycle parking facilities (railtech.com, 2019). You now may start wondering what all of these investments in our Dutch bicycle hobby looks like.
