In today’s video, I’m talking about some of my favourite sword plants for planted aquariums and why I think they work so well in so many different setups. Sword plants, also known as Echinodorus, are incredibly versatile, beginner-friendly, and suitable for everything from nano tanks to large display aquariums. By coincidence, all of the plants featured in this video are currently growing together in my 40-gallon tank, with several of them also being staples in my other setups. Throughout the video, I use the terms “sword plant” and “Echinodorus” interchangeably. They refer to the same group of plants, even though the genus has technically been reclassified botanically. All of the swords shown here are grown in low-tech aquariums with no CO₂ injection and no liquid fertilizers. Some are planted in aquasoil, but I’ve also grown these same plants successfully in capped dirt tanks and even plain inert gravel. I rely entirely on fish waste for ongoing fertilization, and I’ll link my article explaining that approach in the description. There’s also a common myth that sword plants require expensive substrates as heavy root feeders, which I’ve personally found not to be true. The video starts with Echinodorus ‘Tropica’, one of my absolute favourite sword plants and easily the one I get asked about most often. Often described as a dwarf Amazon sword, it stays compact at around 10 cm tall, making it perfect for nano tanks or use in the foreground or midground. It’s extremely easy to grow, even under basic stock lighting, though it can be a little prone to initial melt when first submerged. Once established, it’s a fantastic low-maintenance option that won’t outgrow your aquascape. Next, I cover Echinodorus bleheri, the classic Amazon sword. This is one of the most widely kept aquatic plants in the hobby thanks to its toughness and availability. While it’s very easy to grow, its size is often underestimated. In the right conditions, it can reach well over 50 cm tall, making it far better suited to medium and large aquariums. It also looks very different when transitioning from emersed to submerged growth, which can surprise new owners. I then talk about Echinodorus ‘Aquartica’, a compact cultivar developed through selective breeding. Despite being rated as medium difficulty by some nurseries, it has always been easy for me to grow under proper plant lighting. Its smaller size and pale green colour make it an excellent midground plant that stands out nicely against darker green species. Another favourite is Echinodorus cordifolius ‘Fluitans’, also known as Radican Sword or Creeping Burhead. This plant has an enormous natural range, which likely contributes to its hardiness. It grows quickly, offers excellent cover for fish, and may be a better option than Amazon sword for medium-sized tanks due to its more manageable height. Finally, I cover Echinodorus ‘Red Diamond’, a beautiful tri-colour cultivar capable of showing red, brown, and green tones at the same time. While stronger lighting helps preserve its colour, it can still display reds on new growth even under moderate, affordable lights. Its compact size makes it one of the most practical colourful sword plants for smaller aquariums. I hope this video helps show just how versatile and easy sword plants can be, and that there’s an Echinodorus option out there for almost any planted tank setup. #aquarium #fishtank #fishkeeping TIMESTAMPS 00:00 - Intro 00:26 - General Points 01:33 - Echinodorus Tropica] 04:43 - Echinodorus Bleheri (Amazon Sword) 08:10 - Echinodorus Aquartica 10:23 - Echinodorus Cordifolius 'Fluitans' 13:12 - Echinodorus Red Diamond
