Manors Double Up | Severn Valley Railway - Spring Steam Gala 2025 - 20-21/04/25

Celebrating the Easter Bank Holiday with steam, as the Severn Valley Railway host their Spring Steam Gala. Visiting engines for the event included new build GWR Grange Class 6880 'Betton Grange', making her Severn Valley debut, running alongside LMS Jubilee Pair 45596 'Bahamas' and 45699 'Galatea', currently masquerading as 45627 'Sierra Leone', with the gala providing a unique opportunity to witness two BR Green Jubilees passing each other. Whilst 45596 previously visited at the 2024 Autumn Steam Gala, this event marks 45699's first visit to the line since being sold by the railway over 30 years ago. 45699 previously called the SVR home in the 1980s, stored in un-restored condition as a spares donor for 45690 'Leander'. The loco was eventually sold on in 1994, and would be returned to traffic by West Coast Railways in 2013. This event also featured GWR Manor pair 7812 'Erlestoke Manor' and 7802 'Bradley Manor', the latter of which freshly returned to steam following completion of overhaul, having last ran in 2019. The weekend would also be 7812's final appearance at the Severn Valley before being sent on a three year loan to the West Somerset Railway. Marking 60 years since the end of steam on the Cambrian network, the event saw 7802 appear in 1965 condition; Vice nameplates and with white detailed smokebox door and buffers. As such, the gala would come to an end with a recreation of the Ian Allan 1965 Ffestiniog Railway Special, almost 60 years to the day, with 7802 and 7812 running a rare double headed service to Kidderminster.
