If you still think a DePIN token is “just incentives,” you’re leaving the most powerful part on the table Mechanism Design for DePIN: DePIN Protocols as Information Aggregation Mechanisms is a session from Breaking DePIN 2025 in Zurich, where builders and researchers explore real-world decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN). Speaker: Krzysztof (Kris) Paruch, Token Engineering Labs What you’ll learn: – The problem / tension: DePIN protocols must satisfy three lenses at once—systems engineering, economics, and VC-scale execution—which often pull in different directions. The core question: how to design rules that are both useful and reliable when physical agents (sensors, robots, devices) are in the loop. – The approach: Treat protocols as coordination machines and information-aggregation machines. Define admissible actions and state transitions; let agent interactions reveal private information that aggregates into prices, probabilities, reputation, reliability. Use tokens as rights & signal carriers (access/work, collateral, governance) so participants have skin in the game and their actions produce truthful signals. – Relevance to DePIN, design for three principles: --- Robustness (invariance): constraints that keep desired properties true under many strategies; --- Incentive compatibility: participants act honestly because it’s optimal; --- Scalability/liquidity: enough depth and participation for signals to be credible at network scale. Practical primitives include resource pricing, reliability scoring, and bonding curves for network value, so tokens don’t just secure consensus, they help secure the measurement of reality.
