While my first hands-on time with an Original XBOX (circa 2002) gave me a glimpse into Max's foreboding world, I never actually had the privilege of playing the other ports of this title until years later. Needless to say, I'll take my Max Payne games in any shape or form, just to experience some bullet-time action in the frigid snow-fallen cityscape of NYC. Unfortunately however, this PlayStation 2 version of 'Max Payne' suffers from an extremely poor frame-rate and the occasional "forced level restart glitch" - even when being played on a PS3 (with various enhancements) through backwards compatibility. While the aforementioned iteration was from a digital download of the game (procured via the PS3's Storefront), I decided to track down an actual retail copy itself - just to see if the physical disc happens to fare any better performance wise on original PS2 hardware. Needless to say (and without much surprise), the experience remains relatively the same from a technical standpoint, but you get the extra added bonus of being able to play the game in its authentic (non-emulated) form. Even despite this title's bold shortcomings and EXTEMELY hard difficulty factor at times, Max Payne on the PlayStation 2 is a solid gaming affair that definitely warrants a play-through, even if to experience the inferior PS2 port and its noticeable eccentricities. Without question, 'Max Payne' and its sequel 'Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne' on the Original XBOX, still remain the best way to become immersed into these memorable noir thrillers. Actually, any version of Max Payne (PC included), along with the equally impressive Game Boy Advance port is worth checking-out in my humble opinion, just to revel in a brief (albeit "worthwhile") nostalgia excursion from yester-year.
