Over the past few years, humanity has endured a "Great Isolation" unlike any other in history. As we move past the pandemic era, our society and our children face a new and daunting crisis: the lingering aftermath of Dopamine Addiction that flourished when social and interpersonal contact vanished. 1. A Tragedy of Isolation: The Atrophy of "Social Muscles" COVID-19 closed school gates and silenced playgrounds. For human beings—social creatures by nature—the opportunity to train the "social muscles" of empathy, consideration, and self-restraint through face-to-face interaction was abruptly stripped away. Digital devices claimed that void. Children became accustomed to the stimulation of a screen rather than the depth of a conversation. They are forgetting how to read a person’s expression or understand another’s heart—skills that cannot be learned from a pixelated display. 2. Algorithms: The New Governance of Dopamine As physical contact was severed, sophisticated algorithms moved in to take its place. While the tyrants of the past used the radio for one-sided propaganda, modern "Dumbing Down" approaches under the mask of "entertainment." Stimulation in Seconds: Short-form videos keep the brain in a state of constant dopamine release. The Paralysis of Thought: It leaves no room to patiently Read or deeply Think. Addicted to instant gratification, the brain forgets how to Question and begins to uncritically consume whatever information the algorithm feeds it. 3. Deserted Classrooms and Silent Homes Tragically, the defensive lines that should correct this dopamine addiction are crumbling. The Absence of Authority: In today’s classrooms, the authority of the "strict teacher"—the mentor who once corrected wrong behaviors and guided students toward the right path—has lost its power. The Loss of Dialogue: At home, parenting has often been outsourced to media for the sake of convenience, and meaningful dialogue between parents and children has been severed. An environment without corrective mentors and reflective dialogue leaves children defenseless, abandoning them as slaves to dopamine and pushing them down the path of modern-day "Dumbing Down." 4. My Mission as a Sabom: Rescuing Children from the Dopamine Swamp The reason I raise my voice in the Dojang, urging students to gather their scattered minds and bodies, is to break this cycle of dopamine addiction. Dopamine comes from instant pleasure, but true self-esteem and a sense of achievement come from the experience of enduring pain and overcoming limits. Focusing on a goal while sweating and self-correcting is the process of recovering the "living energy" that a smartphone can never provide. We must teach our children once again: stepping away from the stimulating noise to Read, Think, Question, Imagine, Decide, and take Responsibility is the only true path to becoming a leader.
