You know your business needs a better plan, but what type and level of planning do you need? Well, it depends! There's actually a couple different types of planning that I do with my clients. The first one is Action Planning. Action Planning is pure practicality. It's focused on 90-day sprints that connect to bigger-picture goals. But it's really mostly about what needs to be done right now, to know that I'm on track for the future. This is ideal for small and medium-sized businesses because you are very, very nimble. You have the ability to make changes quickly. And even a couple of significant changes that might take place over the quarter, or two quarters, can really change the future trajectory over the long haul. Long-term strategic planning is not as practical for a smaller business, with too many variables and not as much control over the marketplace of a much larger business. If you are a larger business it's probably time to look for more strategic planning. By strategic planning I mean a majority of the time you spend planning is actually spent on strategic thinking, even more so than building the actual planning itself. Your focus is on long-term vision and making sure that as the company grows rapidly, that things stay in control. And often you are keenly aware that the entire team must be aligned to the long-term vision and the core purpose of the company. If you're in the phase of your business, where you are in the trenches, making sure stuff happens every single day, then an action plan is exactly what you need because it's practical, it's easy to execute, and it helps you make a lot of progress efficiently. Be sure that your action plan aligns with your one and three-year goals - and you should be all set. If you are at a point where your focus is on building high-performance teams that execute on your vision. For more information about How to Build a High-Performance Team check out my video for more details. You need to be focused on your strategic plan, as you pick up speed, you want to make sure that your company has stable, reliable practices over the long haul, that you don’t lose control as you grow, then you are ready to really take a step back with your management team, and think about your strategic, long-term, big picture. The bottom line is, your company needs a plan. The question is, what kind of plan do you need right now? If you're not sure, I'd love to have a chat and help you out.
