Hector Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique, II. "Un Bal" - Original MIDI Performance

Welcome back, Classical MIDI fans! We continue our musical fantasy trip with the second movement of Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, "Un Bal" - a waltz both mysterious and soothing, somehow at the same time. It is probably the most "traditional" of the work's movements, at least in the structural sense, though here Berlioz it is presented as the second movement, rather than the standard third. Mahler - a devoted champion of the work as a conductor - did the same in his first three symphonies, though it is debated as to whether or not this was an intentional l'hommage. After an exciting introduction, the dance begins playfully with a main theme based on a transformation of the idée fixe. As the dance continues however, it becomes more and more strident, culminating in a frantic conclusion that would leave dancers on the floor breathless. Berlioz's own programmatic notes describe the movement thus: "The artist is placed in the most diverse circumstances of life, in the midst of the tumult of a festival, in the peaceful contemplation of the beauties of nature. But everywhere, in the city, in the fields, the cherished image comes to present itself to him and stirs up trouble in his soul." On the technical front, I'm continuing to refine my understanding of the SSO strings, not only in finding the best balance with the other instruments in the template, but also in how to best program them. I'm getting there, but there's always room for improvement, as I feel like I still need to fine-tune the first notes of legato phrases at certain dynamics.
