Welcome, Classical MIDI fans! Today we begin a "trip" down fantasy lane (see what I did there?), with the first movement of Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, "Rêveries – Passions"!! Considered by some to be the milestone marking the birth of the avant-garde in French music, it is easily one of the lynchpins of "programmatic music", describing in the composer's words the romantic sufferings of a gifted artist who has poisoned himself with opium because of the unrequited love for a beautiful and fascinating woman. It is semi-autobiographical, as Berlioz himself felt likewise towards the Shakespearean actress Harriet Smithson, who later went on to become his second wife. The first movement is described in the composer's own program notes thusly: "The author imagines that a young musician, afflicted with that emotional affliction which a famous writer calls the vague des passions, sees for the first time a woman who unites all the charms of the ideal being of which his imagination dreamed, and he becomes madly in love with her. By a singular oddity, the cherished image never presents itself to the artist's mind except in connection with a musical idea, in which he finds a certain passionate, but noble and timid character like that which he attributes to the beloved object. This melodic reflection and its model pursue him incessantly like a double idée fixe. That is the reason for the constant appearance, in all the movements of the symphony, of the melody that begins the first allegro. The passage from this state of melancholic reverie, interrupted by a few fits of unprovoked joy, to that of a delirious passion, with its movements of fury, jealousy, returns of tenderness, tears, and religious consolations, is the subject of the first movement." So, this performance had all sorts of issues, as I was working through it - specifically within the string sections. Due to the need for a set of articulations that were con sordino, I decided to use the Cinematic Studio Strings library, but for some reason, I could NOT get a mix that had a sound quality I liked. The Normale patches just felt "mushy" and synthetic, and I couldn't get it to work. SO I tried the Modern Scoring Strings library again, but couldn't get the con sordino sounds I wanted, which led me to Spitfire Studio Strings, part of the new Spitfire Studio Orchestra bundle, and voila! Finally get the sounds I was looking for - with a whole bunch of new solo instruments on top of it! Let me know what you think in the comments below!
