This video shows a virtual hike of the entire Crab Lake Trail in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). The trail is a spur trail of the Border Route Trail (BRT). At 1.72-miles from the trailhead, the Crab Lake Trail splits at a 'Y' intersection. This hike follows the western fork of the split (known as the Crab Lake Cut-Off) up to the BRT. The entire hike is about 2.4-miles in length. The weather was beautiful for early May. The temperature was in the upper 50's and the sky was mostly sunny with virtually no wind. 00:00 - Begin hike at the trailhead parking lot along Loon Lake Road. The trail follows an old logging road for most of the way. Much of the area you are walking through was burned by the Ham Lake Fire in 2007 20:55 - View of Crab Lake. For the next mile or so, the trail closely follows the south shoreline of Crab Lake 41:00 - View of Crab Lake. This is also the location of the start of the portage to Mayhew Lake 43:45 - Enter the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) 44:05 - Cross the small stream that flows between Whisker Lake and Crab Lake 44:30 - The trail splits here. We head to the left along what is known as the Crab Lake Cutoff which will eventually connect to the Border Route Trail. If you go right, you'll continue along the main Crab Lake Trail for about another mile and also arrive at the Border Route Trail, just further to the east. The trail is somewhat more difficult beyond this point 01:05:10 - Beaver pond overlook. A couple beaver lodges and a dam are visible. In the far distance, the hills you see are on the other side of Gunflint Lake in Canada 01:07:10 - Reach the end of the hike where the Crab Lake Trail intersects the Border Route Trail. The Border Route Trail runs for about 65-miles east-west across the Boundary Waters Canoe Area along the U.S./Canada border This video was recorded on May 10, 2025.
