In a rare gathering of main line steam. Two of the World's largest and heaviest, operating steam locomotives join together for a double header. On this day they have already finished their sold out excursions from Tacoma to Everett, Washington and are now heading home. The SP 4449 will go to Brooklyn, Oregon and the UP 844 to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Weather was not cooperating this day, and we see the usual overcast, light rain, and gloom that the Pacific Northwest is famous for. Traffic on the railroad was extremely heavy with trains backed up all the way to Seattle. The special train could not catch a break and was traveling slowly with many stops all the way to Portland. The historic Southern Pacific roundhouse in Brooklyn, Oregon despite it's rich history was demolished to make more room for the Union Pacific Intermodal yard. The steam locomotives have a new home not too far from this location. SP #4449 is currently operational and frequently offers excursions several times a year mostly in Oaks park located in Portland, Oregon. UP #844 is currently operational and runs at least one excursion if not more per year. SP&S 700 is undergoing mechanical work and expected to be operational likely in 2020. Oregon Railroad & Navigation #197 is undergoing a complete restoration with no timetable for completion. Video filmed May 22nd, 2007.
