It will also be crystal clear that I am not comfortable with Auto Wahs… at all. I’m just not a wah guy in general. It’s just not me; never was. Alas, I’m reviewing and demoing every compact Boss pedal, so the Boss AW-2 is just another pedal I’m going to have to demo. You may remember this spiel from my TW-1 review. To be clear, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the AW-2, or any Auto Wah really. The problem lies within me. I was never properly reared on the Wah. Sure, when I purchased my first wah, I was pretty enamored with it. But that excitement was fleeting, and I never got into the type of guitar playing that heavily used a wah. Anyway, The AW-2 pretty much improves on the TW-1 Touch Wah design, but it's a little more complex to dial in. We now have 4 knobs to work with. I’m going to go ahead and quote the holy grail of Boss information sites (StompboxZone.com) on how these knobs work. They said it much better than I could have: “The RATE knob controls the amount of modulation. Turn off modulation by turning the RATE knob to min. The DEPTH knob sets the range of the modulation effect. In the min position, modulation will be off and the wah intensity will be controlled by the picking strength. The MANUAL knob adjusts the frequency where the modulation Wah effect kicks in and the SENS control sets the sensitivity of the wah. High sensitivity means that a wah effect is produced with soft playing.” The AW-2 is pretty tricky to use. I found it hard to get the knobs set to where I would get a nice wah at any of my pick attacks. Overall, the AW-2 adds some complexity as compared to the original Boss auto wah, the TW-1. It’s definitely a cool pedal with some interesting tones available. With the extra flexibility, there is also some ambiguity of use, which may turn off the casual auto wah-er, such as myself. -Cameron Johnson Music by Atma Weapon atmaweaponnc.bandcamp.com facebook.com/atmaweaponnc
