Holyrood has rejected legislation that would have made Scotland the first nation in the UK to legalise assisted dying. Scotland's parliament rejected the Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill, brought forward by Liberal Democrat MSP Liam McArthur, by 57 to 69. Health Secretary Neil Gray announced earlier in the day that he would abstain. The decision came after opponents of the Bill raised concerns about the impact the legislation could have on vulnerable and disabled people – while others raised concerns about a lack of safeguards for medical professionals opting out of the process. MSPs made changes to the Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill in four lengthy sessions at Holyrood last week, with a total of 175 changes to the legislation agreed. This was the third time MSPs have considered legislation on assisted dying, with two previous attempts having failed at their first vote.
