Hey everyone! I explored the incredible Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Oklahoma on 12/2/2024. This place is a hidden gem, with stunning granite peaks, diverse wildlife, and some awesome hiking trails. Join me as I tackle the Kite and Bison Trails loop - a 6 to 7-mile adventure that offers breathtaking views and a chance to encounter some of the refuge's most iconic residents, bison. The Wichita Mountains are an unexpected landscape rising from the plains, formed by ancient volcanic activity. This creates a unique mix of grasslands, forests, and rocky terrain, providing habitat for various plants and animals. The refuge is famous for its bison herds, reintroduced in the early 1900s. You might also spot elk, deer, longhorns, and various birds. The refuge plays a vital role in protecting these species and their habitat. The Kite and Bison Trails loop is located off Oklahoma State Highway 49. Some of the highlights include the "40-foot Hole", a deep canyon section with unique rock formations, scenic overlooks with panoramic views, and wildlife viewing opportunities. Remember to keep a safe distance and observe these amazing creatures in their natural habitat. Before you head out, make sure to download a map, as cell service can be unreliable. Bring plenty of water, as no water sources are along the trail. Most importantly, we should respect wildlife by observing from a distance and never approaching or feeding animals.
