ZARC Pendulum Magicians Deck Profile (June 2017)

Pendulum Magicians have seen a resurgence with the release of Pendulum Evolution, and here's the best build of them right now: Magicians are a very strong contender right now; they have excellent resource management, they're consistent, and they have arguably the highest ceiling of the format. For resource management, Magicians are great with Card Advantage, Tempo, and The Philosophy of Fire. Skullcrobat Joker, Oafdragon, Harmonizing Magician, and Space Pendulumgraph are all just straight +1s, but when you consider the pendulum summon, Wisdom-Eye, Astrograph, the other Magicians, and your pendulum summon itself can generate loads of Card Advantage. For Tempo, Magicians are average, at least, because they have access to a lot of Rank 4 xyz monsters. Time Pendulumgraph, however, is how Magicians will control tempo for the most part. In late game scenarios, Z-Arc can shift the tempo greatly, but it takes far more setup than just searching the Pendulumgraph. Hand Traps and Dimensional Barrier do help in this regard as well though. Finally, when it comes to managing Fire, Pendulums are far above average due to the Magician's pendulum effects. Double Iris doubling battle damage, Poison Magician increasing their attacks, Black Fang halving opponents' attacks, and then Harmonizing further increasing your own attacks all ON TOP of Timestar Magician and Astrograph Sorcerer already having formidable attacks of 2400 and 2500, respectively. You can very easily deal 4000+ in a single attack, and I think I've done a maximum of 6600 in one attack. Then again when you get into the late game, having monsters like Zarc to clear the board and attack directly, again, helps you manage this resource. For more on resource management, here's a great playlist    • Card Advantage - Yugioh Theory   As for consistency, you can very easily end with a board of 2 XYZs or 1 XYZ and 1 Synchro at least, but better hands can obviously do more. This consistency usually comes from the Trifecta: Astrograph, Joker, and Wisdom-Eye all being at 3 is insanely good, and then considering that you also have 2 Space Pendulumgraph and 2 Duelist Alliances and 3 Sky iris to extend your plays, Magicians can set up some insane boards almost every game. Unfortunately though, this is the decks greatest downfall as well because when you brick, the deck can become completely unplayable. You need at least 2 scales, and then 2 other monsters to pendulum summon to make a play, but if you only open with 3 playable cards, you're gonna have a rough time... unless you opened the trifecta lmao When comparing their ceiling to other decks, what other deck can special summon upwards of 5 different monsters? ...I'll wait... lol. Most other decks, Zoodiacs most notably, are normal summon decks with normal summon problems, but Magicians have a pendulum summon to raise the ceiling on top of other ways to make plays, such as Astrograph Sorcerer and Black Fang Magician. Like a good Zoodiac hand results in Drident + Emeral + Backrow, but a good Magician board can result in Drident + Emeral + Backrow + another synchro/xyz + Scales + Scales for next turn. Now Emeral isn't anywhere near as important in this deck, and you definitely wouldnt need it turn 1 if you had a good hand, but that's just a comparative example to show how much higher the ceiling is. All in all, Magicians are the best non-zoo deck, and are definitely a strong sleeper pick for the North American WCQ in a few weeks.
