Learn how to practice and play test effectively so that YOU can get the most out of your testing sessions! Stop wasting your time, improve your testing to improve your gameplay! Testing is the foundation of your Yu-Gi-Oh! playing ability. Testing is the difference between you picking up a deck for the first time and someone who's played it all format. Naturally, it plays a very large part of your success, so in order to be more successful you either need to test or practice more, OR you can do it more effectively. The WORST thing you can do is just sit across from an opponent and play a bunch of game 1s with no siding. However, this is what I see most players do when they "test", and it's a complete waste of time. Okay, maybe not completely wasteful, but it doesn't tell you anything about the cards that you dont draw, it tells you nothing about playing post-siding, it doesn't help you practice playing in time, it gives you very little information about your deck. When testing, you want to learn as much about your deck as possible. Also, I do want to mention that going to locals or playing in tournaments is not testing. Your views and opinions will be biased by the results of the game, and you will be the only one to observe your games in most cases. You may forget things, you might not see certain cards. There are too many variables OUTSIDE of your control to really learn much about your deck. My personal testing process: 1. Learn the plays: I do this by making a list of all the combo cards in a deck and then playing out every combination of combo cards with an opponent as we figure out what the best play is. One of us starts with the combo, the other plays a random hand. I try them all going first as well as going second. 2. Next I look for specific problems from part 1: Why did I win games? Why did I lose them? Was the combo good enough? What did it need? What was good? Was it good going first or second? What cards did I not need? How often did I use each card? There are a lot of questions you can ask yourself, but the important thing is to actually have questions so that you can answer them. 3. Test more to answer each specific problem This is when your testing gets very focused on solving a specific problem like going second or having stronger turn ones. Dealing with Master Peace. Playing through disruption. Whatever problem, it may be, you testing against that situation over and over again while making spell tweaks to the deck until you find the right balance. Keep in mind that the last 2 steps also take side decking into account! You play more sided games than non-sided games, so do not forget about them. Once you've answered specific problems, play matches with a clock. Practice full, tournament-style matches. This is the most time-consuming part of testing with the least reward, but it's necessary in order for you to play matches well in events. If you are short on time, you can also shorten the clock to maybe 30 or even 20 mins if you and your opponent play fast. The reason you do this last is because by now, you should know how to play your deck and how to answer certain situations, so playing faster shouldn't be a problem. *Special step: Testing Subjective Skills I don't always do this, but if there is time, I like to sprinkle this in the last step or do the after the other steps. Again making reads and sending misinformation are one of the most important skills to practice, timing is big, sequencing, identifying roles, etc. Finally, don't forget to DOCUMENT and COMMUNICATE. Your testing partner/circle are your most important tools for improving. You'd be foolish to think you will learn everything on your own, and even though games/matches are played individually, Yu-GiOh! is a team game. I was looking at the ARG Providence results last week, and 3 Pure Zoo decks topped, and they all played the same exact list.... that was not by accident! 3 players didn't just pop up with the same list randomly lol. They TESTED TOGETHER, build the deck together, and ultimately they made a lot of good choices, and their results are proof of Proper Testing!
