Rocktrumpets (also known as Brazillian Jasmine). I’ve deliberately cropped this supject to emphasise the abstract shapes of the flowers. It was the shape, all those hard, sweeping edges, that drew me to these flowers in the garden centre yesterday. And the yellow in the middle. I saw a blue with them before I’d even got them home, so I’ve added a little blue vase, and a subtle green-blue in the background - which I may intensify in the painting! So this one is definitely about the composition. But also about trying to keep a sense of shape and form, light and shadow, over which the strong, abstract shapes of the flowers will impose themselves. Frankly, I’m going to winging it today, and going by feel. I’m expecting to be tip-toeing along a sharp edge somewhere between reality and design, trying to find the sweet spot for these amazing flowers. Materials --------------- Surface: 10 × 8 inch Ampersand Gessobord Panel Brushes: I’ll definitely be leaning strongly toward flat synthetics today, and will also be getting the Princeton Create silicone spatulas out. The paint will be going on thickly in the lights of the flowers, most likely the palette knife will feature too, it’s a Hobein MX no.1 The dagger ivory flat will be used with a level of commitment! Medium: Linseed oil and a little solvent Paints: Lead white (titanium will work, but I think the goopyness of Rublev lead white is going to lend itself REALLY well to these flowers) Cad yellow Cobalt blue (ultramarine will do fine) Transparent red oxide Green Gold Raw umber Ivory black Phthalo green Tools: ChromaMagic and the Paul Centore Munsell value scale. -----------------------------HELPFUL LINKS----------------------------- The app I use to investigate the colour is called ChromaMagic. You can find it on the Apple and Google Play stores, and there is also a Windows version. It's very inexpensive and extremely useful! If you struggle at all with judging values and colours, or with mixing, this is a great tool to help you calibrate your estimates by giving you immediate feedback on how close your guesses come. You can get the Munsell value scale - which allows you to translate values from the app directly to your painting - from Paul Centore on Ebay here, also very inexpensive: https://www.ebay.com/itm/223003792036 Subscribe to my email list to get notifications of future live streams and other random stuff about painting in oils: https://www.learning-to-see.co.uk/sub...
