A Kenyan boy was missing out on school due to poor vision

Mbaruku’s eyes had troubled him since he was very young. They were often sore and red, and he could hardly see objects right in front of him. When other children played soccer, Mbaruku would sit on the sidelines, cheering and wishing he could take part. His blindness made learning difficult, but his mother sent him to school a few days a week so he wouldn’t be lonely. Again and again, his mother, Mwajungu, tried to get treatment for her child. But it always came down to money – and the cost was far beyond her means. Thanks to the donations from the supporters of The Fred Hollow Foundation, a Foundation-trained community health worker told Mwajungu that her son could have cataract surgery and it wouldn’t cost her anything.
