Super Robot Showcase: Tetsujin 28 from "Tetsujin 28-gou" (2004) / スパロボショーケース:「鉄人28号」(2004)の鉄人28号

(In accordance with copyright claims, most of this video has been cut.) What if Tetsujin 28 from "Tetsujin 28-gou" (2004) was in Super Robot Wars? An ability showcase. "Tetsujin 28-gou", translated to Iron Man #28, is a remake of Mitsuteru Yokoyama's 1956 manga. The original manga is the first to focus on a giant robot, predating Mazinger Z by 16 years, and was followed by a black-and-white anime adaptation that would be localized into English as Gigantor. The 2004 TV anime adaptation is directed and written by Yasuhiro Imagawa, who had previously served a similar role on Giant Robo: The Animation, another adaptation of a Mitsuteru Yokoyama mecha work. It possesses elements soft science fiction and detective mystery, delivered with a tragic tone. It was followed by a movie, "The Morning Moon of Midday". Though it is based on the 2004 adaptation and shares its studio and writer/director, it is actually a non-serial movie that cannot fit into the continuity of the TV series, and has characters who differ somewhat in personality and history from the TV series. Set in the beginning of the 1950s soon after the lifting of American postwar occupation of Japan, the 2004 remake of Tetsujin 20-gou follows Shoutarou Kaneda, a famed boy detective. Shoutarou comes to discover an awakened Tetsujin 28, a giant robot developed by his father as a weapon to be used during the Second World War. He soon comes to uncover numerous other mysterious regarding remnants left over from the Second World War, and ultimately comes to face the mysteries underlying Tetsujin 28 itself. Compared to other mecha anime such as Mobile Suit Gundam and Kishin Corps, the 2004 remake of Tetsujin 28-gou comments less on World War 2 itself, rather focusing on the challenge of transitioning from the hateful and violent period of war to a time of peace. Many of the stories involve real world incidents that affected Japanese civilians in World War 2 or the subsequent postwar period, such as the killing of the animals in Ueno Zoo in 1943, the sinking of the passenger ship turned cargo vessel Kokuryuumaru in 1944, the bombing of Tokyo through 1944 and 1945, the Mitaka and Matsukawa train derailments of 1949, and the development of Kurobe Dam in 1956.
