They house numerous invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Aquatic plants are an important part of the biodiversity of rivers. Various species of floating, submerged, and semi-submerged aquatic plants provide essential support for the river’s animal diversity. Besides these plants, phytoplankton and algae act as primary producers at the base of the river’s food chain. As a result, various species of fish, birds, and aquatic animals are found in abundance in the aquatic environment. Fish account for the majority of the biodiversity of our country's rivers. Besides coastal rivers, these rivers are the primary source of freshwater fish resources. Various species of small and large native fish are found in these rivers. Most of the country’s protein demand is met by freshwater fish. Naturally bred fish are harvested from the country’s vast inland rivers. These freshwater fish are renowned for their taste and nutritional value. There are more than 250 species of freshwater native fish in Bangladesh. These native fish include Bata Labeo, Nandi Labeo, Golden Mahseer, Pabda, Olive Barb, Dwarf Goonch, Queen Loach, Grey Featherback, One-strip Spring Eel, Indian Featherback, Great Snakehead, Wallago, Rohu, Catla, Long-whiskered Catfish, Spotted Snakehead, Dwarf Catfish, Piyali, Two-spot Barb, Ganges River Sprat, and Indian Carplet. Additionally, many coastal rivers, estuaries, and some inland rivers are important breeding grounds for hilsa. Almost half of the fish harvested from the country's rivers are hilsa. Besides these fish, a large number of shrimps are also harvested from the rivers. Various species of crabs are also part of the rivers’ rich biodiversity. Besides fish, rivers are significant habitats for aquatic mammals as well. Once, freshwater dolphins were common in many rivers. But their numbers have declined due to river pollution, reduced navigability, and other reasons. Otters, another water-dependent mammal, are found along the banks of rivers and canals. However, the number of otters in the country has decreased alarmingly due to various reasons. Animals such as dolphins and otters are vital indicators of river health. Like mammals, many birds are also dependent on rivers. These birds are known as waterbirds since they are completely or partially dependent on water for their survival, depending on the species. During winter, thousands of migratory birds flock to haors, beels, rivers, and chars along rivers seeking food and shelter. Among them, the number of ducks is high. Among the migratory ducks in Bangladesh, Ruddy Shelduck, Common Shelduck, various species of Goose, and Pochard are notable. Our native wild ducks are also seen with them. Besides wild ducks, various species of Plover, Godwit, Curlew, Sandpiper, Tit, Heron, Cormorant, Gull, and Tern also flock along rivers and riverbanks. Along with birds, various species of frogs, snakes, and tortoises can be seen roaming in the rivers. The rivers and riverside areas are also the natural habitat of the critically endangered Northern River Terrapin of our country.
