On October 22, 2024, 26-year-old Mya Johnson, a devoted mother of two, entrepreneur, and social media content creator from Tallahassee, Florida, was shot and killed inside her home on River Breeze Lane. Mya, who was nine weeks pregnant at the time, had spent years building multiple income streams, raising her sons Kaden and DJ, and creating a life centered around independence and stability. That night, an argument with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Jha’kari Martin-Sugrin, escalated after she confronted him about interactions with his ex and refused to continue the pregnancy. What followed was a fatal shooting that also claimed the life of her unborn child. Despite inconsistencies in Jha’kari’s account, forensic contradictions, prior domestic disturbance calls, and the children’s statements, prosecutors ultimately charged him with two counts of manslaughter rather than murder. Although bail was initially denied at arraignment, the system later reversed course and granted him release — a decision that raised serious questions about accountability and public safety. Mya’s death left behind two young boys, a grieving family, and a growing conversation about domestic violence, reproductive autonomy, and systemic failure. This case is not just about one tragic night — it’s about what happens when warning signs are documented, ignored, and minimized until it’s too late. Rest in peace, Mya Johnson.
