Word of God | Do not be afraid. Have faith! (Mark 5:21-43) | Sr. Miriam James Why all this confusion and this crying? Why this discouragement? Why this downcast spirit? Why are you sad? That is the question the Lord asks in today’s Gospel. It is the question the Lord asks you, and He brings you here in this daily meditation on the Word of God because He desires to be your consolation, your support, your strength. For just as He performs these miracles today in the lives of these men and women, He also wants to perform a miracle in your life. He is here. Do you truly believe this? He is here, alive and glorious, to heal you, to free you, as well as those you bring in your prayer. Welcome to the daily meditation on the Word of God. Today is Tuesday. Let us pray. Let us go to the Gospel. Pay very close attention today to every word of Our Lord. If you can, I even ask you to pause for a moment, because this Word has the power to heal and to set hearts free. Many times we focus only on the meditation, which is very important, but even more important is the proclaimed Word. So be attentive, because I am sure that from here you will draw many lessons—solid nourishment, concrete teachings, words of wisdom and discernment for your day today, for the today of your life. Let us go to the Gospel. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Come, Holy Spirit, come through the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Your most beloved spouse. Gospel according to Saint Mark, chapter 5, verses 21 to 43. At that time, Jesus crossed again in a boat to the other side, and a large crowd gathered around Him. Jesus remained by the shore. Then one of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came up. When he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet and pleaded earnestly, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come, lay Your hands on her, so that she may be healed and live.” Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed Him and pressed in on Him. Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years. She had endured much at the hands of many physicians and had spent all she had, yet instead of improving she grew worse. Having heard about Jesus, she came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His cloak. She said, “If I but touch His clothes, I shall be healed.” Immediately her hemorrhage stopped, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from Him. Turning around in the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My clothes?” His disciples said to Him, “You see how the crowd is pressing upon You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’” But He looked around to see who had done it. The woman, frightened and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came forward and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed of your disease.” While He was still speaking, people from the house of the synagogue official arrived and said, “Your daughter has died. Why trouble the teacher any longer?” Jesus overheard the message and said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, Jesus saw the commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. He went in and said to them, “Why this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.” And they ridiculed Him. Then He put them all out, took the child’s father and mother and those who were with Him, and went in where the child was. He took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” The girl immediately arose and began to walk around. She was twelve years old. At that they were utterly astonished. He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat.
