Kashmiri political groups protest India's order

(5 Aug 2019) Hundreds of Kashmiri activists staged a demonstration in Pakistan on Monday in protest at India's decision to change Kashmir's special status. They gathered near the Indian embassy in Islamabad, chanting slogans and condemning India's move. The protest followed an Indian presidential decree revoking a law that gives the state of Jammu and Kashmir a substantial degree of autonomy. The now-revoked law also forbids Indians outside the state from permanently settling, buying land, holding local government jobs and securing educational scholarships. The decree was issued amid heightening tensions in Kashmir, as thousands of newly-deployed Indian troops arrived and some internet and phone services were cut. Critics of India's Hindu nationalist government see the move as an attempt to dilute the demographics of Muslim-majority Kashmir with Hindu settlers. Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and both claim the region in its entirety. Two of the three wars India and Pakistan have fought since their independence from British rule were over Kashmir.
