Minerva is the first single from the album Sjå, Jahn's first album in over 25 years. Released April 26, 2025. Sjå can be found on Bandcamp: https://jeffjahn.bandcamp.com/album/sj All instruments performed on fully improvised 1st takes by Jeff Jahn in Portland Oregon (7 string guitar, viola, drums, bass, oberheim, Nepalese death flute etc.). Even the lyrics and main vocals were improvised on a first take. Only the backing vocals are not improvised. "When I recorded it, I thought of Minerva as a kind of unrequited collaboration between Zappa and Bowie that was never going to happen... two of my biggest influences. That along with some early Steely Dan and mid 70's Fripp touches and the drum fills are an overt nod to The Cars because this is one song where I intentionally simplified the drums. But in some ways it became the first thing Ive ever done that has some Gypsy flourishes. My great grandmother was Roma, but you'd never guess that looking at me. I just seem super Scandinavian. Never judge books by their covers." -jeff jahn Minerva has no timing or pitch alteration and no AI or drum samples were used on all truly first takes. The idea being an organic music that arises and highlights a fresh human response, so the listener is hearing the song as it is being conceived/made. This promotes a sense of shared discovery.
