Sonata in D major for 2 trumpets (Petronio Franceschini) 0:06 Grave 1:11 Allegro 2:41 Adagio 4:23 Allegro Petronio Franceschini was a cellist by trade and one of the early masters of the musical "School of Bologna." He devoted his energies to composing mostly for the church but also created opera as was expected of all respectable composers of that period. The city-state of Bologna enjoyed a period of relative political calm and artistic "renaissance" that lasted nearly a 100 years between 1650 and 1750. During the span from around 1680-1700, the trumpet superseded the wooden cornetto in Italy as the lead "brass" instrument and came into its own as a solo instrument for virtuosi performers. One can hear the echo effect between the two trumpet soloists that harkens back to the early Italian church sonatas from the period of Giovanni Gabrieli and Dario Castello. The artworks (paintings and sketches ) are contemporary with the music and includes the masterpieces of Guercino and others who were associated with the Bologna School and other regional guilds. Like the music of that epoch, the paintings are filled with a fantastical grandeur. The facial expressions of their subjects capture the ethereal qualities of angels and saints ecstatically contemplating an otherworldly realm. Yet there is also an intimacy and sensuality that makes even the sacred art appear much more fluid and secular then in earlier centuries. The original MIDI file was created and uploaded by Michel Rondeau to IMSLP.com. I extensively edited the files to reflect the balance of a small Baroque orchestra consisting of 1-2 trumpet soloists, 4-5 violins, 1-2 violas, 2 celli, small harpsichord and double bass. In this latest rendition, I softened the violins and trumpets, created a more staccato effect in the strings for clarity and re-imagined the trills in both the trumpets and violins.
