This program originally aired in December 1961 on WPIX channel 11 in NY. I’m from Los Angeles and growing up I did love all the L.A. Kiddie Show hosts, but New York had their share of them as well, including Bill Britten known for Bozo but who later portrayed other characters on shows such as Johnny Jellybean. Other famous NY hosts were Officer Joe Bolton, Chuck McCann, (among others) and night-time host of monster and horror movies, John Zacherle who embodied his character Zachary and was loved by young and old alike. Back in the day of the 1950’s and early 60’s it was common practice to make a kinescope copy of a live program. A 16mm film camera was fixed on the master monitor in the studio’s control room and they filmed the show off the picture tube when it was going out live. Not as good as video tape or a program shot on film, but acceptable. However, you’ll note on this print that there are brief sequences where you’ll see a snippet of a TV commercial or a cartoon. This served as cue marks for when the print was shown again on TV so the station could insert sharp 16mm prints of the filmed TV commercials and of the Bozo cartoons. Luckily, Bozo advertises several of the commercials himself live while including parts of the young studio audience into the advertisement itself. Although my print did not have any years or codes printed on the edge of the film stock, I was able to date the film by what years the toys were released to the public. For instance, Hasbro Think-a-tron came out in 1960 and Remco’s The Thinking Boy’s Toys Science Kit from 1961. Bozo also does a quick ad for the night-time TV show “Adventures at Scott Island.” This was the re-run syndicated name for the 1957 show “Harbormaster” which starred Barry Sullivan and was still playing on TV in 1961. In the Kiddie Gallery that day were the Glendale Brownies. (Glendale being a neighborhood area in Queens.) Enjoy the Show as I don’t see much, if any videos of Bill Britten as Bozo on the internet. My favorite parts are the live advertisements that Bozo puts on and not so much the clowning around he does until it’s time to play the next cartoon or advertisement.
