Fluidised bed bioreactors (FBRs) have gained increasing interest for biotechnology applications. In this type of reactor, a fluid (gas or liquid) is passed through a solid material (biocatalyst) at high enough speeds to suspend the solid and cause it to behave as though it were a fluid. This process, fluidisation, has many advantages such as high degree of mixing, uniform temperature profile, and cost-effective manufacturing due to operating the reactor in continuous mode. As a result, FBRs have many industrial applications such as in wastewater treatment and anaerobic fermentations. In this video, which forms part of the course "Different types of bioreactors", I will discuss the principle behind the FBR, its advantages/challenges, and important design parameters.
