Located in the county of Devon, and around nine miles north of Torquay, is the town of Dawlish. The name 'Dawlish' is Celtic in origin, and refers to the original name of the stream here, translated as 'dark stream'. Its first recorded reference dates back to 1044 when King Edward the Confessor granted the parish of Dawlish to his then Chancellor and chaplain, Leofric, on the condition that he built bridges and supplied soldiers to construct defences in times of war. For several centuries, Dawlish was a tiny fishing village. This began to change from around the late 18th century as seaside resorts began to rise in popularity across the country owing to the health benefits associated with the sea and its surroundings. During the Georgian era, wealthy visitors were able to travel to Dawlish via stagecoach. In 1846 the railway arrived in Dawlish. This brought about significant growth in the area. At the time it was the first seaside resort to be served by railway west of Weston-super-Mare. The station was rebuilt in 1875. Today it is situated on the Riviera Line which runs between Exeter and Paignton. The tracks are protected from the elements (to an extent) by the South Devon Railway sea wall as passengers are treated to striking coastal views. Just northeast of Dawlish town centre is Dawlish Warren. This is an area of extensive coastline on the Exe estuary consisting primarily of holiday accommodation including caravan sites. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
