Located within Greater London (although historically part of Middlesex up until April 1965), and around 10 miles west, and slightly south, of central London, is the town of Twickenham. Geographically, Twickenham is situated on the north bank of the River Thames, which historically defined the border between Middlesex and Surrey along this section of the river. The River Crane, a tributary of the Thames, also runs through the town. The first recorded mention of a settlement at Twickenham dates back to 704 AD, when the area was ceded to Waldhere, Bishop of London. At the southeastern end of the town is the Church of St Mary. This is believed to have been in existence since the 11th century, although the church of today was largely rebuilt in the early 18th century following the collapse of the original nave. The 15th century tower survived, however. From the late 17th century, Twickenham became a favoured area for the houses of the nobility, merchants and other wealthy residents. Various notable poets and authors resided in Twickenham at various points, including Alexander Pope, Horace Walpole and Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In 1848 the railway arrived in Twickenham. This ushered in an era of major change, effectively transforming it from a riverside village to a commuter town. The station is situated on the Waterloo–Reading line, as well as being the northern terminus of the Kingston Loop Line which connects to New Malden. In 1907 the RFU (Rugby Football Union) purchased a 10¼ acre market garden in Twickenham. Upon this ground, Twickenham Stadium was built, with the first stands being added by 1908. This developed into what is today the world's largest rugby union stadium, and the second largest stadium in the United Kingdom behind Wembley Stadium. With a capacity of 82,000, it is the venue for England's national rugby union team's home matches, as well as being the headquarters of the RFU. Its nickname of 'The Cabbage Patch' is a nod to its origins as a vegetable garden before its purchase. Historically, Twickenham was located within the county of Middlesex up until 1965 with the formation of the ceremonial county of Greater London. Concurrently, the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames was created, to which it belongs. During the 1960s, Eel Pie Island across the river hosted many influential rock bands including The Rolling Stones, The Who and Pink Floyd among others. The Eel Pie Island Hotel, originally built in 1830 as a leisure destination famous for its eel pies, was converted into a jazz club in the 1950s, and became known as 'Eelpiland'. Despite being one of the leading hubs of activity in the London music scene in the '60s, the hotel fell into disrepair, culminating in a fire in 1971.
