A mere half a mile off of the southwest corner Seabrook Island , in the mouth of the Edisto River, lies Deveaux Bank, an ephemeral shoal which has been documented on maritime maps since the 1700's. Constantly growing, contracting, moving and changing, we can see it clearly, but very few of us have every had the opportunity to visit it. From sea level it appears to be just a large sandbar with some light vegetation, but from above, you gain an appreciation that there is much more to it. While Deveaux has been documented as an important seabird rookery since the 1930's, hard work from SCDNR, the Coastal Conservation Leage, Manomet Conservation Services, Cornell Lab of Ornithology and University of Massachusetts-Amherst has recently shed more light on just how critical Deveaux is to so many different endangered bird species. Scientific research efforts have recently helped us learn that Deveaux Bank hosts over 25% of North America's Whimbrels and was confirmed in 2019 as the world’s largest known Whimbrel roost, with nearly 20,000 birds—half the East Coast population. It also supports one of the Southeast’s largest roosts for the federally threatened Red Knot. This video provides solid evidence of Deveaux's role as one of the largest Brown Pelican nesting grounds on the Eastern Seaboard. Deveaux Bank was designated as a Site of International Importance in the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN) in late 2024 and I attended the formal award ceremony at Camp St Christopher on March 26, 2025. On March 14, 2025, South Carolina approved a seasonal closure of Deveaux Bank from March 15 to October 15 to protect nesting and migrating birds. During this period no landing on Deveaux is permitted by SCDNR. Outside of this period visits are permitted during Nautical Twilight and Daylight hours , but only within the Intertidal Zone. Please respect these rules. I made this video as an attempt to allow more people to see and appreciate the beauty and criticality of Deveaux. I am a photographer, but I am a conservation minded naturalist at heart. I was very careful not to disturb any of the birds during my 7 flights over Deveaux during the 7 months covered in this video. I think you can see that the birds were effectively oblivious to the presence of my small and relatively quiet UAS, due to the altitudes at which I flew and the gentle flight patterns. My hope is that you can gain an increased appreciation for the complex tidal maritime grassland community and hydrogeology, and via that appreciation will support continued conservation efforts for this critical habitat.
