Perfect pitch, also known as absolute pitch, is often treated as a musical superpower. Many musicians assume that having perfect pitch means hearing music more accurately, understanding it more deeply, and performing at a higher level. But what does psychology research actually say? In this video, we examine the science behind absolute pitch, explore whether it can be learned later in life, and explain why skills like relative pitch, auditory processing, and musical structure may matter even more for musicianship. Using a real case study from my colleague Jordan, who trained himself to develop aspects of absolute pitch, we compare personal experience with peer-reviewed research in music cognition and psychoacoustics.
