The Caipirinha has been one of the most requested cocktails on this channel and I am so happy to finally get to it. Nobody knows exactly when the Caipirinha emerged in the Brazilian region of Piracicaba, interior state of São Paulo sometime in the 19th Century. Historians say it was created by landowning farmers for fancy parties and other events. There is an account of it's origins hailing from Portugal around 1918 with a popular recipe containing Lemon, Garlic and Honey as a local remedy for Spanish Flu but I could not confirm this myself. According to Jim Meehan of PDT the recipe has been traced back to 1856 by historian and Cachaça expert Filipe Jannuzzi who found a reference to it's recipe in a document written by civil engineers during a cholera outbreak in the region of Paraty a major Cachaça producing region. Another thing I don't hear mentioned as much is how close to Ti Punch it is. Cachaça really being a form a Rhum Agricole as it is distilled from fresh sugarcane juice. Either way I know you all love this drink, so mix it up this summer and enjoy!
