On March 7, the Catholic Church commemorates Saints Perpetua and Felicity, two of the most powerful martyrs of early Christianity. Perpetua was a young noblewoman and new mother, while Felicity was her pregnant slave. Both were arrested in Carthage in 203 AD during the persecution under the Roman emperor Septimius Severus. Despite pressure from family, Roman authorities, and the threat of execution in the arena, they refused to deny Christ. Their story survives in one of the earliest Christian martyr texts ever written, including Perpetua’s own prison diary, making it one of the most extraordinary historical documents from the early Church. The witness of these saints shows how Christianity transformed the Roman world — uniting slave and noblewoman, mother and martyr, into a single testimony of faith. In an empire built on power, spectacle, and fear, two women proved that faith could not be broken. This is their story. Being Catholic is based. Be one yourself.
