John and Larry discuss how to keep warm blooded critters out of the house. Both hosts had squirrel problems and have a couple of tips to keep the unwanted guests where they should be, outside! Keeping warm-blooded pests from invading your home involves a combination of preventive measures and, in some cases, the use of traps or repellents. Here are some steps you can take to deter these pests: Seal Entry Points: Inspect your home for any cracks, holes, or gaps in walls, doors, windows, and the foundation. Warm-blooded pests like rodents and squirrels can squeeze through very small openings. Seal these entry points using caulk, weatherstripping, or hardware cloth. Pay special attention to gaps around utility lines and pipes. Install door sweeps to block gaps under exterior doors. Maintain Landscaping: Trim tree branches, bushes, and other vegetation away from your home. Overhanging branches can serve as bridges for pests to enter your home. Store firewood and other potential nesting materials away from your house. Store Food Properly: Keep food stored in airtight containers to prevent attracting pests. This includes both human and pet food. Clean up crumbs and spills promptly. Regularly Clean and Declutter: Remove clutter in your home, as it can provide hiding spots for pests. Regularly clean and vacuum to remove crumbs and other potential food sources. Secure Trash: Use lidded trash cans both indoors and outdoors to prevent pests from accessing garbage. Empty your trash regularly, especially food scraps. Set Traps: If you suspect pests have entered your home, use traps to capture them. Common types include snap traps and live traps. Check traps regularly and follow local regulations for the humane disposal of trapped pests. Use Deterrents: Employ natural deterrents like peppermint oil or mothballs, as some pests, like rodents, dislike these scents. Ultrasonic pest repellent devices emit high-frequency sound waves that can deter pests. Hire a Pest Control Professional: If you have a persistent pest problem, or if you're dealing with a large infestation, consider hiring a pest control expert who can assess the situation and recommend appropriate treatment. Close and Insulate Crawl Spaces and Attics: Ensure that crawl spaces and attics are sealed and insulated properly to prevent pests from making nests or using these areas to access your living space. Remove Attractants: Remove bird feeders and pet food dishes from outdoor areas, as these can attract pests like squirrels and raccoons. Remember that different pests may require different approaches. It's important to identify the type of warm-blooded pest you're dealing with and tailor your prevention and control methods accordingly. Additionally, taking a proactive approach to pest control is often more effective than dealing with an infestation once it has taken hold.
