In this video Ben talks through the key parts of the tectonic history of the British Isles. The UK has an amazing tectonic history. Although no longer on an active plate margin it has been the part of two major orogenies where different parts of the UK were on different continents separated by oceans! (and a third orogeny further away that has a minor impact on the UK...) 1. The Caledonia orogeny joined Scotland to England and created large transfer faults like the great Glen along with epic thrust faults like the Moine Thrust! (Shout out to the Rock Stop Cafe!) 2. The Variscan orogeny Joined Cornwall to England and now the remains of the event are seen by the granites of Cornwall. 3. The Alpine Orogeny was a little further from home however fold structures in Southern England are present for this Alps building event!
