Before embarking on this yoga practice, check with your doctor/surgeon that you are ready to start gentle exercise. During times of high stress on the body, including surgery, the sympathetic, the fight and flight side of our nervous system, is active. This restorative practice will help to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, the calming side of our nervous system, to aid in our recovery. We want to gently start to stretch the abdominal muscles as well as activate them, but there should NOT be any pain. If you feel any pain then carefully come out of the pose and re try that pose when you next come to the practice, it will improve over time. This can be done on the mat or on the bed and have 2 pillows/blocks and a strap to hand. Most importantly, treat yourself with kindness and compassion, your body will not move/ stretch as it did pre-surgery. Allow yourself recovery time, do not be hard on yourself. Accept where your body is today and know that you are on the road to recovery.
