Hatley Castle close to Victoria, BC, Canada on Vancouver Island is part of the Royal Roads University, a national historic site, and was once home to coal baron James Dunsmuir, the richest man in British Columbia. Many movies and TV productions were filmed at Hatley Castle. In this introductory video we'll walk through the ancestral forests of Royal Roads to the Castle. James and Laurel Dunsmuir built and resided in Hatley Castle in 1910. They led a lavish, royal like life of entertaining, reaching the pinnacle of Vancouver Island society. James Dunsmuir who built Hatley Castle as his principle residence in the early 1900's, had become the riches man in British Columbia. His father, a poor immigrant from Scotland, discovered the largest coal deposit on Vancouver Island. His name, Robert Dunsmuir. The heir James Dunsmuir, became the premier of British Columbia. In the castle he and wife Laurel, entertained lavishly. However, their children who never worked, could not keep up the castle and it was handed to the Government. It a military school in the military academy in the 1940's for those naval men who joined the overseas fight in World War II. After it became a military academy, Royal Rods University took over Hatley Castle and to this day it is a stunning university with about 3000 students. The gardens and all the grounds are kept up meticulously. The gardens at Hatley Castle have the oldest Japanese Gardens in Canada. As well, there is a mediterranean garden, a rose garden, and knot gardens that grace the from of the castle. Royal Roads is a quiet place and not too many tourists venture here. I have enjoyed taking many visitors here. The hike through the forest is spectacular with huge trees that are hundreds of years old. Royal Roads and the castle have been the set for many movie productions including X-men.
