Vladimir Putin is one of the most infamous and influential world leaders of the 21st century. He reshaped Russia into an authoritarian ultra-nationalist dictatorship, dragged the world back into global tensions, disrupted democracy and peace both in the West and Middle East, and started the largest war in Europe since WWII . But contrary to popular belief, his road to power wasn't inevitable or even likely. He only became prime minister because Boris Yeltsin fired his previous prime minister , Sergei Stepashin. Back then, Putin was fairly unknown and was only selected because he seemed controllable. However, Yeltsin's decision to fire Stepashin almost didn't happen. Stepashin initially seemed loyal ; Yeltsin began to mistrust him only after he failed to handle the chaos in Chechnya decisively. If Sergei Stepashin had acted more strongly against Chechnya in August 1999, Vladimir Putin would have never risen to power, and our world would look radically different.
