Doom 64 is the only Doom game to be developed by Midway Games—not id Software—and its soundtrack, atmosphere, and overall art direction are far darker than those of the first two games in the franchise. For these reasons, some people will tell you Doom 64 is the weakest of the classic Doom games; others will tell you it's an underrated masterpiece. I'm definitely in the latter camp. And to commemorate QuakeCon 2021, I wanted to share this retrospective analysis about Doom 64 and delve into why it's still my favorite classic Doom game. Topics include: lore, music, combat, demons, level design, Hugo Martin's appreciation for Doom 64, Nightdive Studios' 2020 port of the game, and Limited Run Games' Doom 64 Classic Edition.
