Alstonia scholaris, commonly called blackboard tree or devil's tree in English is an evergreen tropical tree in the family Apocynaceae. It is native to southern China, tropical Asia and Australasia, it is a commonly planted ornamental plant in these areas. It is a toxic plant, but traditionally it is used medicinally for myriad diseases and complaints. Tall straight trunk with a greyish-brown, smooth fluted bark. The branches are arranged in whorls at the top. The leaves seen in whorls of 5-10 are dark green and shiny above, paler beneath, about 5-30 cm long and 3-12 cm broad, widest in the middle, elliptical in shape with a tapering base and nearly rounded apex. The petioles are very short. The flowers are fragrant, greenishwhite in color, sessile, borne terminally in globose clusters on elongated stalks, and attract bees. Fruits are green, elongated pods about 30 cm long that contain many seeds. It's from the flowers of the Saptaparni (Alstonia scholaris) tree that are small greenish-white, growing in tight clusters that stay until December. Alstonia scholaris is an evergreen, tropical tree native to the Indian subcontinent and , Srilanka, Malesia and Australasia. At high doses, an extract of the plant exhibited marked damage to all the major organs of the body in both rats and mice. The toxicity appears to depend on the plant organ studied, as well as the season it is harvested, with the bark collected in the monsoon season being the least toxic, and bark in the summer the most. Intraperitoneal administration is much more toxic than oral. Rats were more susceptible to the poison than mice, and pure-bred mice strains were more susceptible than crossbred. The toxic effects may be due to the echitamine content of the bark, an alkaloid.
