In this episode, we are trying a comparison of etiquette in Canada versus Germany. In particular, we are looking at table manners. In terms of etiquette in Germany, in 1788, Adolph Franz Friedrich Ludwig Knigge (1752 -- 1796) wrote his book "On Human Relations" ("Über den Umgang mit Menschen"). In this work, Knigge covers not only table manners, but gives basically a 'code of conduct' for social interaction in general. However, the rules that are best known and still taught and learnt by almost everybody in Germany till this day are those rules covering table manners. With our two guests, who are experts in the area of gastronomy, we are discussing what is in terms of table manners an absolute must and what is an absolute no-go. Can you find in our little clip all the mistakes that our two colleagues are doing while eating? Anton Heggen, owner and chef at Fraser Park Restaurant in South Burnaby, found a total of at least 30 mistakes, while Thomas Dietzel, CEO at Dietzel International, stopped counting at 15. Of course, it may be put into question, whether the newer generations in Germany are behaving or eating still according to Knigge's rules. Anton Heggen points out that when he came to Canada, he noticed that here many things regarding table manners are less formal than in Germany. Thomas Dietzel misses in North America, for instance, that all parents teach their children how to use cutlery properly. When summing up which type of etiquette might be the most applicable - the one according to Knigge or the rather informal variant - one might argue that depending on the situation or the kind of social interaction a compromise may be the best way.
