In positive reinforcement dog training, we use rewards such as toys or treats to lure a dog into a desired position, providing the treat at the exact moment the dog completes the behavior. The lure of the reward, over time, in essence becomes a form of sign language between the handler and the dog. The next important part of this process is the timing of the reward delivery. It is imperative that the reward is delivered at the exact moment the dog completes the behavior, so the dog begins to associate that behavior/position with receiving the reward. As an example, when you ask a dog to sit, the exact behavior that should be rewarded is when the dogs butt touches the ground. When training any new cues with your dog, it is of the utmost importance that the human is clear on what the exact behavior should look like in order to provide the reward. For training a sit, simply saying success looks like sitting down is not exactly clear or descriptive enough. Especially as dog and owner progress to more advanced dog training, cues or tricks, clearly defining what success visually looks like will significantly increase speed of learning. When training a dog to stand from a sit or a down, reward delivery should happen at the exact moment the dog is back up on all four paws.
